Build Relationships When You Build Your Own Website

icon1 Posted by Admin in Build Website Online on 12 31st, 2009 | no responses

E-commerce, or doing business through the Internet is certainly picking up. This may primarily be because of the ease and convenience of shopping online, not to mention the savings from a significantly lower overhead compared to brick-and-mortar stores.

However, regardless of the benefits of e-commerce, why is it that traditional brick-and-mortar stores are still around and seem to grow instead of decline?

One major reason could be because these kinds of stores still represent and hold a significantly higher degree of security to the consumer as compared to a website. The sense of permanence, familiarity and reliability that a physical location holds is what brings customers back to the store.

While online businesses cannot compete with the physical assurance brick-and-mortars have, web-based enterprises can still develop a degree of familiarity with their customers that fosters a relationship of trust and reliability. And majority of this is built around the design of a website.

The One Unchanging Principle: Think Like Your Customer Whether your business has a physical or virtual location, one principle in building relationships with your customers remains – and this is to think like them.

The more successful businesses have prospered because they have made their customers” mindset their own. For traditional businesses, it meant everything from conveniently locating goods to offering ready and credible assistance.

Successful websites should follow suit. With the lack of tangible contact, a potential customer could have little basis for forming a relationship with an online store. And if building customer loyalty is your goal, then suitable substitutes must be found.

Looks and feels familiar First impressions last. As soon as a visitor clicks on a link to your site, he expects to see something that he will like, and therefore trust.

Take an online garden supply store for an example. A cut and dry layout of columns and rows, with little to no pictures won’t give the visitor the impression he has accessed a gardening store. Not a lot of hits would result, much less in sales.

However, if that same site was built to look like a garden shed, for example, the customer might feel more at home with shopping there because the look of the site used a familiar concept with the customer and incorporated it into the over-all look and feel of the website.

Being able to capture and retain your visitor’s attention is the first step in converting a visit into a sale and eventually working towards a strong business relationship.

Ready Assistance and Assurance A customer appreciates a ready source of help and information when he or she is shopping. So again, thinking like a customer, find ways where a visitor can access answers to common questions about your products. This could be in the form of a prominent FAQ page or a concise product description alongside a picture.

It helps to strategically locate short but strong testimonials from satisfied customers among your products so visitors can see right away the reliability of the service and goods you provide.

Safe and Secure While familiarity and assurances of reliable service is great in building customer relationship and loyalty, the bedrock of any relationship is trust. So place a good deal of emphasis on this.

Almost all business and financial transactions over the Internet are now performed over a 128-bit encryption system. So settle for nothing less than this. It will also help to prominently display this information on your payment and sales confirmation page to assure your customers this measure of security.

Build on the Relationship The beginnings of a lasting relationship start from a good first impression. Hopefully, the look of the website has drawn your visitor in comfortably enough to make them want to purchase something from you for the first time. Once they have done so, it is still well within your control to assure that that first transaction will lead to many more.

You can do this through a number of ways, the most common of which is to thank the customer for purchasing from you and to assure them of your products” warranties (if any apply).

Offer your customers useful tips and information on a resource page so they can visit you again, even if to purchase is not the primary intention. Most online transactions require an email address to be submitted so invite the customer to subscribe to your e-newsletter (if you have one). You may offer perks and / or discounts if they do subscribe. However, to avoid being labeled as spam, make sure the material is clearly solicited for and is sent in timely manner.

About the best indicator of loyalty is when your customer sees you as an expert in your line of business. Aim to be this through your website and your customers will begin to see you as more than just a supplier, but a trusted consultant.

By taking the necessary steps with your website in cultivating familiarity and trust with your customers, results will be reflected not only in your sales but with your customer relationships as well.

Selecting a Quality Domain Name

icon1 Posted by Shelley Lowery in Build Website Online on 01 4th, 2010 | no responses

When you’re ready to launch your web site and you’re trying to select a good domain name, there are many factors that need to be taken into consideration.

Select a Domain Name that Reflects Your Web Site

Above all else, your domain name should reflect what your web site is all about. For example, if your web site is about grooming a dog, you certainly wouldn’t want to select a domain name like ‘mybusinessname.com,’ as this would have nothing to do with your web site’s focus. You would want to select a domain name that tells the world what your web site is all about — something like ‘doggrooming.com.’

Select a Domain Name that Contains Your Web Site’s Keywords

Another consideration of great importance are your keywords. Try to select a domain name that contains your most relevant keyword phrase, as some Search Engines place relevancy on them. A keyword phrase is two or more words that best describe your web page. If your web page is focusing on grooming a dog, your best keyword phrase will be “dog grooming.”

Select a Domain Name that will be Easily Remembered

With millions of web sites accessible on the Internet, it is also very important to select a domain name that will be easily remembered. As in the ‘doggrooming.com’ example above, ‘doggrooming.com’ is very easily remembered, contains the most relevant keyword phrase and describes the web site in explicit detail. It is the ‘perfect’ domain name for this particular web site.

Select the Best Domain Extension

Another consideration of importance is the domain name extension. Although there are many new domain extensions available, dotcom is still the best choice. When typing in a web address, Internet users automatically want to type in a .com extension, as this is the extension that has been embedded into our brains from the start.

Avoid Using Numbers in Your Domain Name

Although you may be tempted to do so, avoid using numbers within your domain name. Including a number within your domain name can cause problems, as when you tell someone your web address, you will continually have to tell them it’s a number and not the word. For example, if you selected a domain name like number1host.com, if you were to tell someone your web address, they may try to type it as ‘numberonehost.com’ instead of ‘number1host.com.’ This type of domain name would cause confusion.

Avoid using Dashes and Underscores in Your Domain Name

Although many people do it, don’t make the same mistake I made when I first started out. Avoid using dashes, underscores or any other characters within your domain name that may cause confusion. When I registered my domain name, Web-Source.net, I actually wanted websource.com; however, it had already been registered. So, I settled for Web-Source.net. Now, when I tell someone my domain name, I have to say it like this: web dash source dot net.

Don’t get me wrong, www.Web-Source.net is now a high traffic web site, but I can only imagine how much traffic I’ve lost over the years due to my domain name. I have received many emails over the years from visitors who had a hard time finding my site. They said they couldn’t remember the domain name and kept wanting to type in websource.com.

Avoid using Abbreviations within Your Domain Name

Although well-known companies, such as IBM, can get away with using abbreviations within their domain name, most companies can’t. As a rule, try to avoid using abbreviations or anything that will be difficult for your visitors to remember. Not only will this cause confusion, but it can also cause your potential visitors to make spelling mistakes when trying to type in your web address.

Avoid using Long Domain Names

Although you may now register long domain names, it’s really not a good idea. I learned this lesson the hard way. I registered ‘www.workfromhomebusinessguide.com’ and the sad thing is … I can’t remember the domain name half the time. How can I expect my potential visitors to remember it? Try to keep your domain name as short as possible. The longer the domain name the harder it is to remember and the more apt your potential visitors are to make a typo when typing it into their browser.

Ensure Your Domain Name is Not a Trademark Infringement

Prior to registering a domain name, you may want to consider searching the Trademark Electronic Search System, http://www.uspto.gov/main/trademarks.htm to ensure your potential domain name isn’t infringing on any trademarks.

Please don’t take this point lightly, as trademark infringement could cost you your entire business. It is your responsibility to ensure that your potential domain name doesn’t infringe on any registered trademarks, as the trademark laws that apply in the hard copy world also apply on the Internet. Any company that registers a trademark has the right to protect their trademark and has the right to notify you that your domain name is infringing upon their trademark.

When you’re ready to begin, create a list of a dozen or more potential domain names, as chances are, your first choice will already be taken. With any luck, one of the domain names on your list will be available.

Take your time and select a quality domain name that will grow with your business. It will be well-worth your time and effort in the long run.

Easy Website Design For Everyone

icon1 Posted by Admin in Build Website Online on 12 1st, 2009 | 3 responses

Yes, there is no doubt that the Internet is back and bigger than ever before. Almost everyone is getting in on the action, from businesses to mere individuals. If you have something to say or a product to advertise, the World Wide Web is the place to do it, either you put up your own website or your own web blog. The only problem is, most people lack the basic skills required to begin their own web page, something that is necessary if you really want maximum exposure for yourself. There are a lot of ways around your computer illiteracy that will help you to begin the web site you have dreamed of launching as a platform for your ideas.

The most easy way to get your web site under way if you are computer illiterate is to hire someone to do the set up for you. Many computer savvy individuals will not like this notion, but that is the point- they are computer savvy, and you are not. Time is money, so the odds are that you will actually save money by hiring someone to set up your site for you by cutting out the tremendous amount of time it takes to get all the bugs ironed out of your site and get it up and running.

If you are an individual who feels you have the time to spare to get your web site up and running, then you may want to try and set up your web site yourself. In order to do this, you will need to master the basic tools of web design- HTML and FTP.

FTP is an abbreviation which stands for File Transfer Protocol. This protocol is commonly used for exchanging files over the Internet, using a server computer and a client computer. The protocol is an open standard, which allows anyone to create FTP server or client software.

HTML stands for Hypertext Markup Language. This language is now considered an Internet standard when it comes to structuring information on a web page- it is the equivalent of the Microsoft Works toolbar, and allows users to italicize or bold their text, link to another page or another article on their own page, create paragraphs, and many other functions. HTML application codes can be found all over the Internet, so don’t worry if you have never heard of this before. A simple search will allow you to find a site which you can download the basic HTML formats from.

Another solution for the computer illiterate in order to enable them to design their own site is to take a course or a few courses in web design. Like many other applications, web design can be an easy concept to master once you achieve the right instruction and practice. There are e-learning courses available through most community colleges and universities, and there are even cheaper ones available over the Internet. If you have a friend who is familiar with computer systems, they will also be able to assist you with your web design.

Are you taking advantage of the powerful automation technology available on the Internet? Common Gateway Interface, better known as CGI, is one of the most widely used server applications on the Internet. This software resides on your server and automatically performs specified functions on your web site.

If you’ve been on the Internet for a while, you’ve probably seen many examples of CGI use and didn’t even realize it. Search Engines, Directories and Forums all use CGI scripts. Scripts can run everything from a form on your web site to an affiliate program. They can give you the power to completely automate your web site.

If you have a subscription box on your web site, then you’re already using a program to process the information. That’s a good start however, there are many additional ways you can use this powerful technology.

Here are some great scripts to get you started.

The Master Series:

Master Feedback

Allow your visitors to provide you with feedback. Master Feedback enables you to add your own information fields with radio buttons, checkboxes, dropdown lists and text fields. The great thing about using Master Feedback is that it helps you spam-proof your site by not requiring your email address anywhere on your page.

Master Recommend

Word of mouth is one of the best forms of advertising. Master Recommend will enable your visitors to recommend your web site to a friend. This great script is multi-lingual, which means that the emails sent can be written in any language.

Master Subscriber Pro

Enable your visitors to subscribe to multiple ezines by checking the boxes beside the publication they wish to subscribe. They’ll only need to enter their email address one time and won’t be forced to leave your web site.

The great thing about this script is that it is compatible with ezines hosted with Egroups, Topica, etc., or any ezine that uses an email address for subscriptions.
Master Syndicator

If you write articles, Master Syndicator will enable you to syndicate your content. You simply copy and paste your article into a form and click on submit. Your article will instantly be ready for syndication. To display your content, webmasters will need to place two small lines of JavaScript within their web page where they’d like the article to display. Each time you update your article, every web site using your code will automatically be updated.

WebBBS

This great script will enable you to set up your own forum. Unlike most bulletin board scripts, WebBBS stores messages as simple text files and creates HTML pages as needed.

This great script supports automatic quoting of message text and email notification of those who want to be informed of new posts.

WebAdverts

Set up a rotating banner system on your web site and track response rates. WebAdverts will enable you to not only set up a rotating banner system, but if you’d like, you can set up your own banner exchange. Banners can be displayed on your pages using SSI tags, IFRAME tags, or standard IMG tags.

The great thing about this script is that you can include banners on CGI-generated pages. In addition, you can filter the banners by allowing certain banners to appear only on certain pages. This script is a little complicated, but well worth it.
Links

If you’ve ever wanted to set up a directory, this great script will make it simple. It is modeled after Yahoo and inspired by The CGI Resource Index. It can be completely customized to match the look and feel of your web site.

Web Design Information

icon1 Posted by Admin in Build Website Online on 12 7th, 2009 | no responses

Web design is simpler than ever, and that’s a good thing. Creating an HTML Page A web page is created using a language called, Hypertext Markup Language, better known as HTML Code. The key to creating a successful web site is to only use tips and codes that will enhance your visitors experience on your web site. I think it’s the way forward for web design. Making a web page that works requires a lot of sensitivity to the various forces at work. As web site designers, we always try to create a web site navigation scheme that (a) is consistent throughout the entire web site and (b) allows the site’s visitors to find what they are searching for quickly and easily. Many web newbies understand that blue, underlined text is a hyperlink. Get control over your web page’s fonts. If the font you use is not available in a visitors computer the web site will use the default font of your computer which is much worse. So try to keep to common and professional web fonts. You don’t have to spend thousands of dollars on seminars or spend hundreds of dollars on books to find out what’s wrong with your web site.

Many graphic designers who specialize in print design like to show off their design talent by creating beautiful image maps that are slow to download. Another advantage for using image maps for site navigation is that graphic designers can show a bit more creativity in designing an image map compared to designing a set of navigation buttons. Usually Netscape gives some problems, especially when you try doing complicated HTML designs. Although learning HTML and some basic web site design techniques is very important, if you want to add special effects to your web pages, you will need to learn some additional coding techniques, such as using CSS and JavaScript.

Today’s simple, bold, elegant page designs deliver more with less: They enable designers to shoot straight for the site’s goals, by guiding the site visitor’s eye through the use of fewer, well-chosen visual elements. Apple’s design has always used a great balanced combination of tone (darks), rich effects and colour to draw the eye. Your corporate logo design needs to convey a comprehensive idea about your company values to the viewers. Your customer identifies you by your logo design, so much so that he or she might identify the product with your brand name, like happened in the case of Sony’s Walkman.

Not only will learning HTML coding provide you with the freedom to update your own HTML documents, but it will also save you a great deal of money, as you will be able to avoid hiring a professional web designer. Writing code by hand also ensures that you write the leanest code possible, which is the ultimate aim of all HTML geeks. But fear not: HTML has one of the easiest learning curves you’ll ever come across and you can create a basic web page with only a couple of lines.

Web Page Design is a Reflection of Your Business

icon1 Posted by Admin in Featured Articles on 12 14th, 2009 | no responses

Consider this scenario. You’re considering patronizing a certain business, and decide to look it up on the Internet before making your final decision. Up pops their website and it looks like someone went berserk with a web design program. The fonts are either unreadable or the text is so large that it screams at you. The colors clash or are so bright that they hurt your eyes. The pictures are out of focus or so large that the page takes forever to load. Hyperlinks lead nowhere, and the site navigation leaves you perplexed. In a split second, you know that you’ll never give this company your business.

This may be an exaggeration, but we’ve all seen bad web site designs. They infect the Web like a bad head cold that won’t let go. You can’t help but wonder what the business owner was thinking. After all, why have a website if it reflects poorly on your company or actually drives customers away?

Often, small- and medium-sized business owners aren’t aware of the impact that their websites have on customers and potential customers. They may know that having a web site is important, but think that professional webpage design is cost prohibitive. So, they conclude that their child, neighbor, or spouse can put something together and that it will be “good enough.” Or, ten years ago they may have actually paid a professional web page designer and having done any modifications for years.

In today’s business world, there’s no getting around the fact that your web page design is a reflection of your business. Whether yours is an e-commerce site, a lead generation site, or simply a small informational website, you need to put your best (virtual) foot forward and project an image that puts your business in the best possible light. Keep in mind that, if you don’t have a good website, your competition probably does and is siphoning customers away from you.

If you’ve hesitated hiring a business web page designer because of cost considerations, it’s time to think again. Unless you need a highly customized, programming intensive site, a web designer isn’t going to break the bank. In fact, there are web page design firms that specialize in helping small- to medium-sized businesses succeed in their online endeavors.

Today, a website designer can economically provide you with hundreds of templates from which to choose. These templates come in a variety of styles that are appropriate for a wide range of businesses. A professional web page designer can easily customize templates, giving them images and graphics that will make your website unique.

In addition, a web page design company can provide you with a suite of options that will help you develop your online business. These tools might include a shopping cart, an SSL certificate, free hosting, email accounts, domain registration, and even marketing strategies.

If you don’t already have a website, your business needs an online presence. If you haven’t updated the design of your company website in two years or more, it’s time to consult with a web page design company. And, if you happen to have one of the nightmarish sites that turn potential customers away, it’s time to look forward, turn over a new leaf, and hire a professional web page designer.
